October 16 “sip, consume, have a few”

October 16th is National Liqueur Day. While there are many types and flavors of liqueurs, my wife likes one, and one only. This makes it easy to buy for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas’s, and just Fridays or Tuesdays. And I have the book “Jack Daniel’s Legacy” by Ben A. Green, 1967. Bought this during a tour of how that Tennessee Whiskey is made.

Where did I meet my wife? Why it was a department store that we both worked at. And, October 16th is National Department Store Day”. Nice that I can honor the fact that retail brought me to meet the girl of my dreams-though I did not buy her through a catalog ( I would have bought the same model but with red hair.)

I have the book “Nickels and Dimes” by Nina Brown Baker, publushed in 1954. This is the story of F.W. Woolworth. He perfected the 5 and 10¢ store concept. This is a great kid’s book on the Woolworth history.

I started my retail management with Woolworth Co. When I worked in an older store in Chicago (just several blocks from Wrigley Field), I picked up this old menu from 1952. I also was able to break down some storage shelving in the basement, and I used that wood to make my current library bookcases. That wood is from about 1911.

I also have a ‘dimestore romance’ about department stores, “The Big Store” by Oscar Schisgall, published 1956.

The intro goes:

Paul Blaze was a hard-driving sales chief with a reputation for getting businesses out of a rut. But his dynamic personality crashed head on with Conrad Selby’s genteel approach to running a department store.

As Paul’s high-pressure methods paid off, Conrad began to worry. Was Paul only a promotion “Genius” or was he trying to steal control?

Patrice Selby, Conrad’s artistic daughter, was even more worried. Paul said he loved her. But Patrice figured that Paul knew as well as she that “the one way to get a family business is to marry it.”

How can you not want to read this book?

October 16th is National Dictionary Day. Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758. I have several dictionaries around the library. Here are two rather large ones. Each has their own book stand. The one on the left is “”Complete Unabridged Little and Ives Webster Dictionary and Home Reference Library” published 1958. Many a leaf has been put between the pages, of which there are 2562.

The second book is “Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary Unabridged” published 1972, with 2606 pages. One Mother’s Day (or it could have been her birthday-a week later) I brought this book into her classroom as a present. I wrote, and drew in the front page for a thank you.

I also have a ten volume set of the Oxford Universal English Dictionary, published in 1937. There are 2206 pages in this dictionary.

What word in the dictionary is always spelt incorrectly? Incorrectly!

I ate a dictionary yesterday. This is thesaurus throat I’ve ever had!

Me: “I’ve lost the dictionary.” She: “Can you look upstairs?” Me: “I can’t look up anything.”

I was reading through the dictionary the other day and I couldn’t believe what I found. Nothing starts with N.

Guess I could be considered a logophile-lover of words.

  1. I may not know Jack as well as Marylyn, but pretty sure Paul’s high-pressure enthods should be changed to methods.

Curious as to what is on Teach Page 89?!
