October 11 ” from a death to the un-dying…”

On October 11th, 1779, Casimir Pulaski died. It is also General Pulaski Memorial Day. Illinois has a holiday for him on the first Monday of March. State offices there are closed. Pulaski was admired by Benjamin Franklin, who he met while in France. It was Franklin who told George Washington to recruit this Count from Poland, for the Continental Army. Pulaski was an excellent calvaryman, and leader.

I have the book “His Excellency, George Washington” by Joseph J. Ellis, 2004.

In the book, I discovered the first big battle by General Washington, when attacked by General Howe. Howe had a much larger army. The battle of Brandywine Creek, on September 11, was a big one. The British lost about 600 men, and Washington lost about 1200 men. While Washington was retreating, Howe tried to cut him off.

This was Casimir Polaski’s first battle. In reconnoitering, he had discovered what the British were doing. He informed Washington, and then took 30 of Washington’s staff, and a few others that were retreating, and charged Howe, bravely stalling him, which allowed Washington to escape.

He later became a general under Washington. Pulaski ended up training the United States calvery, later being called the Father of American calvery.

October 11th, 1961, Chico Marx died. I have always been a big Marx Brothers fan. Have enjoyed their movies. I have the book “The Marx Brothers, Their World of Comedy” by Allen Eyles, 1969. It has pictures and snippets from all of their movies.

While I don’t own them, I have checked out from the library, and read, Groucho’s, Harpo’s autobiographies, and a biography of Chico, written by his daughter. My mom liked the Marx brother movies on TV, and would watch with me. I found out that it was only for Harpo Marx. She loved watching him play the harp. Once that was over, she would leave the living room.

October 11th, 1858, Louis Pastuer discovered that garlic was antibacterial. Further studies since then have found of many health benefits from Garlic. I have two books that go into the healing qualities of garlic. First “The Complete Guide to Natural Healing” by Tom Monte, 1997. It explains first over 1000 studies on the medicinal benifits of garlic. Then there are at least 20 references of specific ailments that garlic can help with.

The second book “Illustrated Encyclopedia of Natural Remedies” by C. Norman Shealy, 1998. It also gives plenty of uses for Garlic: including Garlic Milk-mixing sliced garlic with milk and simmering to give to infants and young children if feverish and croupy, and chopped garlic mixed with honey, steeped for several days, then strained. This honey then given by spoonful to boost immune system and treat infections.

Of course, my favorite health benefit from garlic, is keeping vampires away. I am a big fan of old horror movies. I have the book “The Seal of Dracula” by Barrie Pattison, published 1975. This book discusses, and has information and pictures of most every vampire movie made. The more I read, the more I want to watch the movies.

Thanks for following this adventure. I hope you found it fang-tastic. And remember, garlic is always the root of all flavor.
