January 1 ‘happy birthday’

Today, we have three January 1 birthdays, and three volumes from Landmark Books. I remember Landmark Books series from the library at Westfield junior high school in Winthrop Harbor. I enjoy collecting these books, not only for the stories, but for the interesting book jackets. While one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, these book jackets were colorful, and had action in the drawings.  They were meant to entice young readers to pick up the book, hopefully to read. Notice that one book is missing the dust jacket. Because of this picture, I had to just now, buy another with the jacket. Of the 140 or so Landmark books that I have, all but two have the book jackets.

On one dust jacket is printed “Reading is fun with Landmark Books. Each book has 192 pages, 20 to 25 drawings, four-color dust jackets.” “They not only hold the interest of good readers but lure the reluctant ones.”

The first birthday is John Smith January 1 (?) 1580 – June 21 1631. ”Pocahontas and Captain John Smith, the Story of the Virginia Colony” by Marie Lawson, Random House, 1950.

Betsy Ross January 1 1752 – January 20, 1836. ”Betsy Ross and the Flag” by Jane Mayer, Random House, 1952.

George Washington Carver January 1 1864 (?) – January 5, 1943. ”George Washington Carver, the Story of a Great American” by Anne Terry White, Random House, 1953.

Pick up a Landmark Book. The kid in you will not be disappointed.
