Today is National Presidents Day, something we have celebrated since the 1880’s. There are a bunch of books about individual presidents in my library. I also have a few books about multiple presidents that I would like to share. ”Lives of the Presidents of the United States, in words of one Syllable” by Mrs Helen W. Pierson,Continue reading “February 19 “what a day for a sale””

February 15 “Hippo Hurricane Holler”
Today is World Hippo Day. Hippos are the one of the largest walking mammals on earth, second only to elephants, and perhaps rhinoceroses. Some are skinnier, and some are chubbier. They are only found in the wild in Africa. Hippos spend most of their time in water, and can be very dangerous. Over 500 people a year die from hippoContinue reading “February 15 “Hippo Hurricane Holler””
February 8 ‘up to the highest height’
Today is Kite Flying day. There are two books that can showcase the fun of kites. First, is the second (of four) books of Mary Poppins, “Mary Poppins Comes Back” by P.L. Travers. Not only on the dust jacket, where the Banks family is tugging on a kite string, but in the middle of the first chapter,Continue reading “February 8 ‘up to the highest height’”
January 25 ‘karma’
January 25th is National Moose Day, and National Florida Day. For National Moose Day, we will use one lesser known Dr. Seuss book “Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose”. This tells quite a remarkable story. The rhyming is there, the illustrations are there, but also a moral is there (of sorts)…or at least, this could be a tale ofContinue reading “January 25 ‘karma’”
January 9 ‘don’t drop and a cop’

According to the book “Hot-Air Ballooning” by Charles Coombs 1981, that date was January 9, 1793 by Jean Pierre Blanchard. He flew from Philadelphia, to Woodbury, New Jersey, for a total of 15 miles.Continue reading “January 9 ‘don’t drop and a cop’”
January 8 ‘whole world in his hands’
Today is Earth Rotation Day. It is said that the Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours. If you were looking at Earth from the North Star, Earth would be spinning counter clockwise. When you visualize the above, you are picturing Earth as a globe, so I am showcasing several books I have on globes. The firstContinue reading “January 8 ‘whole world in his hands’”
January 4 ‘your eyes may feel heavy’
World Hypnotism Day I have several books on hypnotism. The prize one is “Hypnotism: Its Facts, Theories, and Related Phenomena with Explanatory Anecdotes, Descriptions and Reminiscences” by Carl Sextus, published 1893. It is a great old book full of wonderful old stories and illustrations. I have included several from the book. No-one or nothing seems to escapeContinue reading “January 4 ‘your eyes may feel heavy’”
