“After vacation…recent buys”

I just wrote an article about my recent vacation in Florida. After sightseeing and reading, I did some research, and found a few more books. I thought the process of what I looked for and found might be interesting. At the very least, one sees my book collecting interests and addictions a little clearer. IContinue reading ““After vacation…recent buys””

“They say it’s your birthday”

Happy Birthday to me. I recently had my birthday, and gifts of books made their way to the library. I have been reading, and thought that folks might like to see what was given. The first book is “The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24’s Over Germany” by Steven E. Ambrose,Continue reading ““They say it’s your birthday””

November 25 “Useful book for self-help”

November 25th is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women to raise awareness about all forms of violence against women. This is a pretty serious topic, and I have a seriously good book, “Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane)” by Gavin de Becker, 1999. Gavin de Becker is perhapsContinue reading “November 25 “Useful book for self-help””

October 8 “Danger is my middle name”

On October 8th, 1871, began the Great Chicago Fire. I have a few books that are classified as “reading copy only”. That means it is in pretty bad shape. In this case, the covers are off, and a few pages are loose from the binding. However, it is still an important book in the library.Continue reading “October 8 “Danger is my middle name””

September 22 “count the memories, not the calories”

September 22nd is World Rhino day. While you can’t always judge a book by its cover, this one is wonderful. I have showed it before, and it is worth a second look. This is “Stirring Stories for Girls” by John F. Shaw & Co. circa 1930. I have seen this book of stories with otherContinue reading “September 22 “count the memories, not the calories””

August 31, “Don’t know where I am going with this”

August 31, 2024 is my daughter’s fortieth Birthday. Sometimes you do buy books for their cover. I have bought her several books, ones that I get to use in this story before I give them to her. Hopefully, she will not have read this before she actually opens the gifts. First is the book “40Continue reading “August 31, “Don’t know where I am going with this””

August 11 “Beauty AND brains…in the news today”

On August 11th, 1942, Hedy Lemarr was awarded a patent for the guidance of torpedos. Her first marriage (of an eventual total of six) was with an Austrian arms merchant. He made her stop acting in Europe, and instead, she hosted her husband’s parties. These parties included Hitler and Mussolini. She also was included inContinue reading “August 11 “Beauty AND brains…in the news today””

August 10″If I were King of the Forest”

August 10th is National Lion day. I have a few books on the subject. We will start first with a tiny kids book, “Tawny, Scrawny Lion” by Katheryn Jackson. This miniature book is is the center of a handful of other miniatures, published in 1980, that my grandkids love to play with. The poor scrawnyContinue reading “August 10″If I were King of the Forest””

July 20 ‘Out of this world’

July 20th is National Moon Day. We celebrate the day that the Lunar Module first landed on the moon in 1969. I have a couple of interesting moon books. The first is “Atlas of the Moon” by Vincent de Callataÿ, 1964. This was published before the lunar landing in 1969. The book goes into muchContinue reading “July 20 ‘Out of this world’”

July 11 ‘But are they real?’

On July 11th, 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto made his first cultured pearl. A cultured pearl is one that has been grown from an oyster that was seeded with a foreign object. My first book is a biography of Kokichi Mikimoto, “The Pearl King” by Robert Eunson 1956. This is a great story about the first manContinue reading “July 11 ‘But are they real?’”
