December 18th is National Flake Appreciation Day. Like fingerprints, they say that no two snowflakes are the same. I wrote a wonderful story about snowflakes, along with showing several books, on January 21st, titled “Brrrrr”. it is worth a second look.
I also have a gift that my mother gave to me when she retired from teaching. They are a bunch of different papers, that when folded properly, and cut out, they would unfold into snowflakes. There were some that made eight-sided flakes, but we all know that snowflakes have six sides. The six sided flakes had to be folded differently. Here are a few that she would then copy to hand out to all of the kids in a class.

December 16th is National Suckling Pig Day. I happen to have a book and story about suckling pigs. The definition of a suckling pig is that it is less than 28 days old, and the only food it has consumed is breast milk. The first book is a standby cookbook “Encyclopedia of Cookery” by the Wise Publishing company, 1948.

There are countless times I have referred to this book. On suckling pigs, they recommend to cook with a small block of wood in the mouth. Then before serving, place a bright red apple in the mouth, and a bright red cranberry in each of the eyes.
Another book with a recipe for suckling pig would be “Weber’s Big Book of Grilling” by Jamie Purviance and Sandra S. McRae, 2001. Suckling Pig can be cooked on a Weber grill! They recommended having luau parties.

We had a Luau party at the Edward’s home to celebrate Audrey’s 50th birthday (or was it her 55th?) It was a Luau on her back porch. There were four or five patio sets with the umbrellas set up with thatch. Everyone had to dress up with Hawaian shirts and leis. Entertainment was piped in Don Ho music, fire and Hula dancers, and a pig on a spit-being cooked all day at the end of the house. Next to the whole pig, was a fountain of Mai-tais. With over 50 people that day, I am glad it was a full pig and not a small suckling pig.We ate and drank well that day.
I hope I haven’t boared you with my stories. Perhaps I am getting a little flakey…
Thanks for reading.
