October 23 “Handle with scare”

October 23rd is National Horror Movie Day. What a day to watch a movie! But what movie? I have enjoyed many of the old black and white horror movies. I have the book “The Movie Treasury: Horror Movies” by Alan G. Frank, 1974. This book does a good job of explaining different genres of horror movies, both from the US and England. There are plenty of photographs of horror movies up to the early seventies.

I have a few actual movies to show you. One of the scariest horror movies, for me anyway, is “Rosemary’s Baby” by Roman Polanski, starring Mia Farrow, 1968. Ruth Gordon won an academy award for Best Supporting Actress.

My brother gave me the movie “Throne of Blood” from 1957. It is actually an unusual adaption of the Shakespeare play “MacBeth” taking place in ancient Japan. Many have said that it is the best movie adaption of “Macbeth” ever made. It is creepy and a wonderful movie.

Lately, I have enjoyed more slapstick, laughable horror movies. How about “Meet Frankenstein”, “Meet The Invisible Man”, and “Meet the Killer, Boris Karlof” all with Abbott and Costello. “Meet Frankenstein” is the best.

Want a little Disney horror? I have “The Nighmare Before Christmas” 1993. Pee Wee Herman (Paul Reubens as a trick-or-treater) along with Catherine O’hara (Sally) are voices in the movie. It is considered one of the best animated movies ever.

Perhaps my best Horror movie was actually a TV series. I have the first season of “The Munsters” 1964.

Imagine the horror I had, when I gave this set of DVDs to my wife as birthday present at her folk’s house. I explained that Marilyn in the TV show (the blond “normal one” who thought she was abnormal) resembled my Marylyn and her family….Well, I was lucky to get out of the house alive.

So watch a scary monster horror movie tonight, or a silly horror movie tonight. It is good to get a little screamish this close to Halloween.

Fangs for the memories.
