July 20 ‘Out of this world’

July 20th is National Moon Day. We celebrate the day that the Lunar Module first landed on the moon in 1969.

I have a couple of interesting moon books. The first is “Atlas of the Moon” by Vincent de Callataÿ, 1964. This was published before the lunar landing in 1969. The book goes into much detail about the moon, ending with the last part of the book being plates of magnificent pictures of the moon.

The second book is “The first Book of the Moon” by Carroll V. Glines. This book is also printed before 1969 (1967). This children’s book also has lots of statistics and stories about the moon. It also has photos and a chapter on the Apollo missions goals: to orbit the moon; rendezvous with the lunar module, and landing on the moon to explore, and return. There was plenty of excitement leading up to the actual event.

I remember being at a picnic at Van Patten Woods, when the lunar module landed on the moon. One adult had brought a portable black and white TV, and there were probably 20 people surrounding the picnic table. I was eleven.

July 20th is International Chess Day. I have several chess sets-still have the one used in my high school chess club. Being a pop-up book collector, I also have a very unusual chess set, “the Pop-up Chess Set” This cardboard chess set is unique in that the board folds open, and the chess pieces stay where they are. The board is held then in a slipcase.

The pieces move like normal. but are held in the “cubes”. The board can close up at any time during a game.

The game can be continued later, just by opening the book.

This is quite an unusual pop-up book. I find myself just opening and closing it. No matter where the pieces are on the board, when the book is closed, the pieces fold flat and are held in place. One of my more interesting pop-up books, you could almost say it ‘eclipses all other pop-ups.’

Thanks for reading.
