Today is June 21. We have several events (and books!) to talk about. I am able to flex, and stretch, and yet be loyal to all who read today.

First is International Yoga Day. I have this book “The Yoga System of Health and Relief From Tension” by Yogi Vithaldas, 1957. I saw this book in the Zion Public Library when I was in high school, and had to have it. Well one like it. Mine has the dust jacket. The author helps us with yoga therapy and physical culture. While I did not go very far (after reading the book), my brother has had very good luck with yoga-he still practices. We both had read this book. What is a yogi’s favorite candy? Chakra-late. What do you call a flexible tomato? A yoga mat-o.

June 21st is also World Giraffe Day. My daughter loves giraffes. I have a couple of books for her. The first is a discard from the Harvard University of the Museum of Comparative Zoology,, (bookplate on the paste-down end paper), “The Giraffe in History and Art”, by Berthold Laufer, 1928. It is a pamphlet that the library hardbound. It was published by the Field Museum in Chicago. I don’t know why it was discarded-it is a very interesting book, and have thumbed through it several times.

The next book is “A Popular Zoology” by J. Dorman Steele and J.W.P. Jenks, 1878.

This is a great old textbook that was used before 1900. There were several kids signatures, along with some children’s doodles throughout. It also is an interesting book to read. There were several pages about giraffes. One interesting note was that giraffes have the same number of vertebrae as other mammels, they are just much longer, may be up to 11 inches thick. Giraffes can grow up to 18 feet, but most only have four. (hah!) What do giraffes have that no one else has? Baby giraffes.

Today is also National Dog Party Day. For this holiday, one cannot go wrong with “Go Dog. Go!” by P.D. Eastman. Where does a Dog go when he drives somewhere?

Why to a dog party, of course. I have read this perhaps a million times to my kids and grandkids. This is a perfect entrance for young minds to the library. As they say, “who’s ready to paw-ty.
Thanks for reading.
