June 3 “When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race.” -H.G. Wells

June 3rd is International Bicycle Day. I enjoyed bike riding in High School a great deal. Then other things caused me to become distracted. Six or seven years or so, my brother helped me to re-focus on bikes. He gave me his old bike. Old as in 1997 Bianchi Veloce. What a beautiful bike. Ever since that package arrived, I have been riding again, never looking back.

I have a few bike books to show you. First is “Slaying the Badger: Greg Lemond, Benard Hinault and the greatest Tour De France” by Richard Moore, 2012. This is a great story about the 1986 Tour De France.

Then I have “Agonistic Cycling” by Agostini Massagrande. I first thought it was Agnostic Cycling” which I took to believe that there was no God to believe in, just riding a bicycle was enough. I was wrong. This is a highly competitive book for trainers and technicians. It is still a great book to read.

Then there is “Bicycling Science” by David Gordon Wilson, 2004. This book is also a wonderful book. First it gives the history of the bicycle, and then details all of the physics on making the bicycle and you work efficiently together.

Lastly, I have a book “The Wheels of Chance” by H.G. Wells, 2002. This book was first published in 1896. It is a wonderful story of a man, Mr Hoopdriver, who takes a ten day biking trip to southern England, falling in love with a mysterious woman, and becoming a better biker.

I am becoming a better biker. I wish to thank my brother, especially for the bike, but also for the above books. Using these gifts, I may be slowing the aging process, just a little bit. As you can see, I do wear my helmet.

“It never gets easier, you just get faster.” -Greg Lemond
