May 4 “a trifecta of events”

‘May the Forth be with You’ (May 4th) is National Star Wars Day. I have plenty of Star Wars books. I loved 1977 when I saw Star Wars (A New Hope).

The first books I have are two of a three set Star Wars flip books. I have “The Empire Strikes Back” and Return of the Jedi” published 1996. Man, I need A New Hope. These are neat little books that you flip with your thumb and you see a few seconds of movie movement.

I have a group of three books “The Art of A new Hope”, “The Art of The Empire Strikes Back”, and “The Art of Return of the Jedi” published 1997. All have great illustrations and stories.

Lastly, I have these five books “Star Wars the Essential Guide to Characters”, Star Wars the Essential Guide to Planets and Moons”, “Star Wars the Essential Guide to Droids”, Star Wars the Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology”, and Star Wars the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels”.

What? Not impressed? “I find your lack of Faith disturbing”

May 4th is also National Orange Juice Day. Let me squeeze in a few orange books. We have “Nuts and Citrus Fruits”. This is two books! “Nuts and their Uses” by Francis C. Owen, and Story of the Citrus Fruits” by Ellen M. Ramsay. This book was published in 1928. I found a lot of interesting facts about citrus fruit. For example, the author states “Oranges are sweet and lemons are sour. But Mother Nature tried the experiment of making a sour orange, also known as the bigarade and the Seville orange, is not good for eating but is used in making marmalade. This orange produced near Seville, Spain. The sweet lemon is grown mostly as a curiousity, since its flesh has little taste. It is quite different in shape from the sour lemon.”

“Citrus Fruits and Their Culture” by H. Harold Hume was published in 1913 by Orange Judd Publishers. I have a great deal of Orange Judd farming books. This book goes first into the history of citrus fruits, and then detailing how to raise them based on location and type of fruit. History states” Mandarin oranges was regarded as the best of the citrus family, just as the Chinese Mandarin or Grandee stood in social rank above his fellowmen.”

The last Orange book is “The Culture of the Orange and Allied Fruits” by H. Clark Powell, published 1930. This is one of a series of books I have on farming in South Africa, using specific climate and soils. I believe that England was still promoting colonization in South Africa until the 1960’s.

Wait…May 4th is also the running of the Kentucky Derby.

Because of all the fervor with the Kentucky Derby today, I thought I would retire to the library this evening to garner a little horse sense. Several equine books are here to assist me:

“Edle Pferde” is a Book of “Noble Horses”. There are illustrations all of horses by Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767) famous in Austria and Germany. This book was published in 1977, and is in German. Mein Deutsch is nicht sehr gut, but I think the horse on the cover is a Klabstrupper.

This next book I acquired not too long ago, and just finished reading: “The Trotting Horse of America-how to train and drive him. With Reminiscences of the Trotting Turf” By Hiram Woodruff. This edition was published in 1874! I am told that this book is still used as a wonderful reference book.

Hope everyone is as big a winner as I am in the library. You can bet I will keep reading. Hope you do as well.
