April 19 ‘Bet it was fun’

April 19th is “National Garlic Day”. I have a cookbook “2018 Great Garlic Cook-off-40 Years of Winning Recipes” by Gilroy Garlic Festival. I have been to Gilroy, and breathed the aroma of garlic in the air. Some of the best hotsauce I have ever tried, was bought in Gilroy.

April 19 is also National Poker Day. I am holding a full house (two books and three things).

First is “Playing Cards, the History and Secrets of the Pack” by W. Gurney Benham, 1960. There is a great history of playing cards, and the similarities and differences of cards between countries are rather interesting.

Of course one should own “Hoyles Rules of Games” by Albert H. Morehead and Geoffrey Mott-Smith, 1961. All types of games have their rules explained, not just card games. I have had to break out this book several times to settle differences.

In college, where I really learned how to play, cards, we had this serving tray that we left on table for people to remember the order of different hands. We played for nickles, dimes, and drinks. Our group of card playing classmates are still our group of “mates”, over forty years later.

One day before a game, a great friend of mine stopped in with this. Said he just found it and thought of me. It is made by Turnit Manufacturing in 1950’s. Spin the knob and the chip holders swing out. Cards were stored under the handles .

I have a box of chips and slot machine coins from various casinos that I have visited through the years. It is a shame now that gambling machines have been automated now. You get the sound of winnings, but gone are the buckets of coins you could win.

I’ll take a chance on a few puns for you.
