March 26 “The trouble with scribbles”

March 26th, is the birthday of Robert Frost (March 26, 1874 to January 29, 1963). I have always loved Robert Frost. In an advanced writing class in college (1977), we had to pick an author and write parodies of several of their works. I picked Robert Frost. He has wonderful imaginative poetry. One of my poor scrawlings is below. My apologies to Robert Frost and his ‘Fire and Ice’:

Beer and Pot

“Some say my life will end with beer,

Some say with pot.

But how I’ve coughed to bring a tear,

I’ll drink to those who favor beer.

But if again my death I’d plot,

I think I’ve had enough headaches,

To say that burning out with pot,

Is no mistake;

To smoke a lot.”

Back to the real poets. I have several books By Robert Frost. I would like to showcase one.

This is “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost, and illustrated by Susan Jeffers, 1978-signed. This is another book that my mom had signed after listening to some lectures by Susan Jeffers, during her Masters college engagement. It is a wonderful poem, and a beautiful book.

Here are two illustrations from the book.

March 26th is also “Live Long and Prosper” Day. It celebrates another birthday, that of Leonard Nimoy (March 26, 1931 to February 27, 2015).

I have the book “Leonard – My Fifty-year friendship with a Remarkable Man” by William Shatner, 2016, signed. My niece worked at Smithsonian-media, and had Shatner sign the book for me when he gave a lecture in Washington D.C. There are many memorable moments in the book. The first is that they actually worked together on an episode of ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ back in 1964.

Later, in ‘The Wrath of Khan’ the U.S.S. Enterprise is four minutes away from destruction. The only way for survival is for Spock to risk radiation poisoning, to go to the reactor room and fix the warp drive. Spock does fix it. With Spock on one side of glass and captain Kirk on the other, Spock with his dying breath tells Kirk, “I have been…and always shall be…your friend. Live long…and Prosper.” He then dies. (Later to be brought back to life in Star Trek III: the Search for Spock.)

Back when I was in college, I took a trip (1979) to visit my brother, also in school. He went to University of Illinois. That Saturday evening, we went to the Main Quad, to I believe Foellinger Auditorium, and watched Star Trek shows with fellow college trekkies. In that time, not sure how they had the show beamed into Urbana.

If Spock has pointy ears what does Scotty have? Engin-eers.

How many ears does Captain kirk have? Three, left ear, right ear, and a final front-eer.

I’ll end this with a Robert Frost quote, “College is a refuge from hasty judgement.”

Thank you for reading.
