World Book day is on April 23, and yet UK and Ireland are celebrating on March 7th. They say that it interferes with St Georges Day celebrations, also on April 23. St Georges is the Patron Saint of England. So March 7th it is. Also on March 7th is my Brother-in-law’s birthday. He is the Patron Saint of Black Sheep, but I love him anyway.
So I thought I would just give a shout out during the first of two World Book Days by noting the most recent book I have just received. It is “The Fuller Service Demonstration” by Fuller Brush Company, 1924.

This is a hard to find book on how to sell Fuller Brushes door to door. While it is not complete-it has seven of eleven inserts-it is more than I have seen at any book sites. I have been looking for any sales book or book of history with Fuller Brushes.

I am excited about this book because my grandfather made a deal with someone at Fuller brushes during WWII. He ordered some corn brooms and sold them out of his trunk. He then bought more, and opened a shop in the basement of Leader dept. store. He worked up to running a big private business after that, and it all started with a few brooms.

I also want to say Happy Birthday to my brother-in-law. He made this book stand. I showed him a black and white grainy photo of the original from Monticello, Virginia, and this is what he came up with. Not only does it have five adjusting shelves, but it swivels. When I am taking pictures of books, I sometimes get glare, and have to move around slightly. This bookcase is a big highlight of my library. I am extremely happy that he made it for me.
And to think that he learned this all by himself. He was shelf-taught.
