February 13 “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and gosh darn it people like me”

Today is Self-Love Day. Before someone gets upset, it is not Onanism, but rather your self respect, how you feel about yourself. Some say that you cannot love others until you love yourself first. Such is the Stuart Smalley quote in the title. The focus on one’s self is on the 13th of February, so can prepare for the 14th, if there is no significant other. One’s own self is significant. How does one understand themself?

This is “Know Thyself, Character Analysis as a Game and A guide” by Wells Carr, 1944. This is a very insightful book. There are 107 different tests to help you see if you are curious, entertaining, a flirt, a good manager, good sport, etc. Each test has ten questions, that you answer yes or no to. There is quick scoring procedure, and then you get a recap. You just have to answer honestly ( One test is are you sincere?).

The author believes that if you can see flaws, or challenges, you can then move to become better. One may always be argumentative, or a bore, or clumbsy, but one can work on becoming less so. While it is impossible to completely turn a concern into a positive, it can be turned into a smaller concern. Don’t focus on a complete 180, but rather small steps toward whatever goal you are looking to change. The key is to understand yourself, and then continue to improve, and support yourself. Don’t be your own worst enemy, be your best friend.

Reading is more than just passing time. Reading can help you grow as a person. In Hamlet, Polonius states:

“This above all: To thine own self be true”.
