Today has two interesting Holidays. There is National Polka dot day; and Dance of the Seven Veils Day. Let us explore each. National Polka Dot Day celebrates Minnie Mouse and her style of dress. Polka dots. The polka dot dot trend began in 1926 when Miss America-Norma Smallwood, wore a polka dot swimsuit in competition. In 1928, Minnie Mouse made her cartoon debut in a yellow polkadot dress. I have two books showcasing Minnie Mouse.
“Minnie’s Slumber Party” 1990, a Little Golden Book. My daughter and my grandkids have all held and read this book. ”The 50 Greatest Cartoons, as Selected by 1,000 Animation Professionals” 1994. The book rates the top 50 greatest cartoons, and Minnie Mouse makes an appearance in #26, The Little Tailor, 1928. The Little Tailor was a Brother’s Grimm story about a tailor who killed seven flies “in one blow”, and a nearby king thought the tailor meant giants, not flies, so he hired him. The cartoon was a big success for Walt Disney.

International Dance of the Seven Veils commemorates the death of John the Baptist. King Herod’s niece danced for him, and promised her anything. She asked for the head of John the Baptist. It was not called the dance of the seven veils until a play by Oscar Wilde was translated into English back in 1993. I have “Salome” by Oscar Wilde, Heritage Press, 1945. It is a striking book, in slipcase. The illustrations are tipped in gold. In this illustration, Salome’s necklace and bracelets, tips of piller, sun, and rim of the plate holding the head of John the Baptist are tipped in gold leaf.

Here we have two days of note, and two sets of books. One from the kids section of the library, and the other from the adult side. You can find books for all ages in my library. So keep reading.
