Today is National Coffee Break Day, along with National Cheese Lover’s Day. We can combine these and have a delicious day at the library. First is a copy of sheet music, written in 1925, ‘A Cup of Coffee, a Sandwich and you”. The music by Joseph Meyer, and the words by Billy Rose and Al Dublin. There is wonderful chorus: “the things I long for are simple and few. A cup of coffee, a sandwich and you.”

I have two books, one for coffee and one for cheese. They are both written by the same author, Hemut Ripperger. He has written two other cookbooks ( mushroom cooking and spice cooking) that are also in the library. So now as the music suggests, let’s have coffee and a sandwich.
First “Coffee Cookery” 1940. Instead of how to just brew coffee, Mr Ripperger shows us how to made special drinks (along with how to cook wonderful things) with coffee. First is Coffee Soda. This is for a form of Iced coffee from 1940! “Make your coffee very strong, using twice as much a you would ordinarily. Sweeten to taste and cool. Fill tall glasses with cracked ice and pour in enough of the coffee extract to fill about one-third of the glass. Add charged water and top off with Heavy cream. Add the cream slowly so that it remains on top.”
How about “Coffee Surprise” which involves stirring up 12 cut up marshmallows, dissolving into a cup of coffee, adding a cup of heavy cream that has been whipped up stiff, and then put on ice (or in freezer) for several hours. Or “Coffee Ice Cream”, which involves coffee, brandy, heavy cream and milk that is frozen. Or “Coffee Jelly” which is gelatin, coffee, and sugar. And there is “Coffee Fudge” with bitter chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, a little butter and salt.
With that coffee is “Cheese Cookery” 1941. Our author has several sandwich recipes that are more interesting than what he suggests in the introduction, “one combo to go”…what his local soda jerk termed “a ham and swiss on rye to go”. First is “Cheese Dreams” It involves a slice of rye bread with chutney (one chutney has mango, raisins, ginger, brown sugar, and spices and seasonings), covered then with american cheese and several strips of bacon. cook until cheese is melted and bacon curls. Another is “Anchovy Cheese Canapes”. Begin with cream cheese blended with egg yolks, then onion juice, several smashed anchovies. Spread on rounds of toast, broiled until delicately browned.
We can have a delightful coffee break with these and other creations. All you have to do is read the book (s)…better Latte than never. Don’t worry, Brie happy.
