January 9 ‘don’t drop and a cop’

Several events and corresponding books for today. We will begin with National Balloon Ascension Day. It celebrates the first flight in the United States. According to the book “Hot-Air Ballooning” by Charles Coombs 1981, that date was January 9, 1793 by Jean Pierre Blanchard.  He flew from Philadelphia, to Woodbury, New Jersey, for a total of 15 miles.

Next is the the book “Ballooning, The Complete Guide to Riding the Winds” by Dick Wirth, 1980. It also has some history, but then shows specialty balloons, and a little “how to” info. This book was given to me from my brother, with the inscription “In case something happens to the pilot, one of us should be ready”. The reason for this, is because he and I took our mom for a balloon ride to celebrate her 76th birthday. Here we are ready to lift.

Here we are ready to lift.

Gassed up to rise.

This was our unplanned landing site. The pilot made it work successfully, and then champagne and Oreos for all.

Today is also National Law Enforcement Day. I have one book that was given to me from my sister-in-law. Her father was a policeman and had this book. It is a great story about being a policeman in Chicago in the late 40’s and 50’s. It is a great true story to read.

“I, Pig, or How the World’s Most Famous Cop, Me, is fighting City Hall” by Jack Muller, 1971.

I also have some badges from family members (Dad, Granddad, and great Granddad) in Zion.

“Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha going to do when they come for you?” Please make sure you pay your library fines.
